Camera Advice???

We were at the Seattle Science Center yesterday and were able to go inside a totally awesome butterfly garden. I took some pictures, but I don't think they do justice to the butterflies and the experience. So, I need some advice. I would like to get a sweet digital camera that takes amazing pictures. Anyone have any thoughts as to which camera to get? Sony, Canon, Nikon??? Which one?

If I could get whatever I wanted, I'd get a Canon Rebel. I'm trying to talk Sam into it and he's not buying it. We have a Canon Powershot and it's a really good, little camera, but I just wish it had a lens I could adjust manually. Yeah, it has a "manual" feature where I can adjust the settings, but I want to actually be able to focus a lens with my hands; I'm not smart enough to know what numbers I want.

If you are just looking for a simple point and shoot, I recommend the Olympus FE-230. We just bought this one and I love it. It is so small and it takes great pictures. You are welcome to come play with it if you want.

The Canon Rebel and Sony are pretty comparable, as far as digital SLR's go. A few of my friends have the Canon and love it. I've noticed a lot of the skill comes in the type of lens and using the features more than how expensive the camera is. There are definitely other features in the more expensive ones, but for now I would say stick to an amount you're willing to fork out and later on upgrade lenses. They make all the difference when you want more blur in the backgroun and really close shots, or wide angle, etc. Good luck on your search. You can call Peter and see where he did his research. He did a lot of comparisons on the Canon, Nikon and Sony.

Canon is the best brand. If I were you I'd make it simple on yourself and not look at anything else. The Canon point and shoots are very reasonably priced compared to other brands. We got one a few months back. Awesome pics and video.

Hi Lacey and Seth! I found your guys blog while I was blog surfing :) I love blogs :) It sounds like the Seattle Science Center is cool - we will definitely have to check that out next year :) It was fun to see pictures of Weston with his guitar - you have two adorable boys! Good luck with buying a camera - we just bought a new one before Hailey was born. We got a Panasonic Lumix and haven't found anything we don't like about it yet. Have a great day!

I finally found a great site with lots of camera tips if you're interested. A girl in my ward is semi-pro with photography and recommended it. There are great tips on what to buy, what lenses, etc. If the site doesn't work I'll email you, but it's http://karenrussell.typepad.com/my_lifejust_not_on_the_ro/photography_tips/index.html. If you scroll down through her different blog posts she answers people's questions and even has an online photography class ($250 big ones!). I'll have to save my pennies!
